Why create comics?

I’ve always had a passion for writing stories and drawing since childhood. When I was in high school I went to my first comic book shop and was inspired to combine the two passions. Around the same time on a visit to the bookstore I ran across Japanese comics of anime that I knew.

This was high school and like many teenagers I was looking for a way to express my thoughts and feelings in a way that people would listen to. In junior year English class, we had to read Gulliver’s Travels. We learned about using satire to critique politics. That idea at the time was so mind-blowing that I took that to use in my storytelling.

The comic medium I believe is one of the best ways to convey a message if done right. The words combined with sequential art can get an idea across better than just words or pictures by themselves. Also unlike with TV and film, you can look at the individual pages and pictures better with a comic book. You can pause a movie or a TV show, but you can’t hear the dialogue when paused where with a comic book you can read the words while looking at the pictures.

I love the comic medium. I think if you are going to get into this don’t do it for the money, do it because you love it because you may not make any money starting out. I had to learn that. For now I just want to tell a good story and if I make money off of my hobbies all the better. Money is important and you do need it for some things, but it isn’t everything especially in this field. Ok, time to get off my soapbox, just enjoy this journey with me by following Deep Grass to the end. Thank you for reading!
